Contraphonic Sound Series @ 937 Liberty Gallery, Apr 3 / by David Bernabo

Host Skull's first output was a 12-minute composition formed by modular synth-ist Herman "Soy Sos" Pearl, vibraphonist Jeff Berman, and my self. It was created to do a few things. Here is more info:

The first edition of The Contraphonic Sound Series exploration of Pittsburgh.

Fourth River Vol. 1: Welcome to Pittsburgh is a twelve-minute meditation on the hidden history of the city from Host Skull, a venture from multi-instrumentalists David Bernabo and Will Dyar. Fourth River is a reference to the little-known aquifer underneath Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle district that serves as the de facto fourth river to the city’s more famous three. Host Skull creates a sonic tapestry of subdued drones, trickling vibes, and consistently steady rhythms that both echoes the forward motion of a river, and reflects on Pittsburgh’s heavy, meteoric history.

The music is accompanied by a booklet of photographs by Elizabeth Raymer Griffin’s Carnegie Mellon Alternative Photo Processes class and writing by Ben Schulman and David Bernabo.

-----------------------------------------------

The Contraphonic Sound Series is a project that aims to document cities through sound. A new exhibit showcasing the Pittsburgh-focused works of the series will be displayed at The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's 937 Gallery from April 3-April 18, 2015.

The exhibit will feature David Bernabo's (Host Skull) "Fourth River," Justin Hopper's "Ley Line" and Lisa Toboz and Jeff Schreckengost's "Homestead/Smokestack."

The exhibit will also feature a new set of illustrations by Schreckengost that find their inspiration in the vivid, expressionist work of early 20th-century artist Maxo Vanka and his infamous murals in Millvale's St. Nicholas Catholic Church, as well as Hopper's poems celebrating Vanka.

Opening night event for Contraphonic Sound Series Fourth River Exhibit is Friday, April 3rd, 7pm to 9:30. Closing evening party, complete with live performance by Host Skull on Saturday, April 18, 5:30 to 8pm
