Close mic setup, session 1.
12/16/2025: First session for Forgives You Everything
I stole 30 minutes after work to turn my amp up quite loud and record some quick guitar ideas. The volume was needed so that enough sound travelled to the other end of my studio where a stereo mic stood. The stereo mic—a Vanguard Audio Labs V44S—was positioned to get the widest span of sound. A closely positioned Electro-Voice RE320 stood about a foot from the amp, which was facing a bookshelf.
This three-mic setup was quite awesome, merging an immediate closeness with some distance that still read as tonal. I often don’t use pedals and as a result, I wouldn’t say I pay that much attention to guitar tone. I think others would also agree. But for this, I was looking for something organic but also metallic.
The pedal chain is a Boss Octave OC-5, that Gamechanger pedal with the piano pedal, and a Dirge Chungus, a pedal I love but have a hard time using since it blows my other pedals out of the water with volume. I find I can dial it in nicely when recording though.
The part is improvised to a metronome and then tripled on some close mic-only overdubs. I saved the session as “The Root of Terror.”
Here’s the result:
After recording these quick bits, I recorded a bunch of rhythmic staccato improvisations to the same metronome.
12/18/2025: In the box arranging
Spent 20 minutes arranging the staccato guitar, one channel with reverb and another without, into two interlocking patterns that can loop. Ended up listening to this on loop for forty minutes. Unsure if it is useful, but damn if I don’t enjoy it.
